3M Doubled N95 Respirator Production in April – What Does This Mean for You?

Who is 3M?

3M is one of the world’s leading N95 respirator mask manufacturers. They are a Maplewood-based company that owns manufacturing plants nationwide, but most of their research, development, and testing is performed in Maplewood.

The U.S. company has shared numerous times that it plans to increase the production of N95 surgical masks. They have nearly doubled their worldwide production since January, increasing their production rate to nearly 100 million N95 respirators every month.

In the U.S., the company has been producing up to 35 million respirators a month up until recently. As the virus has continued to spread, relocation efforts have been optimized to ensure no places face critical shortages of essential protective equipment.

The company has stated that they also plan to double their worldwide production again, producing as much as 2 billion masks in the next year alone. But with many countries limiting or blocking the export of N95 masks and other equipment, the company has taken another approach.

Starting in January, 3M has gradually increased the production of respirators and doubled its global output to nearly 1.1 billion a year – including 35 million N95 face masks for the U.S. alone.

A new collaboration was made possible because of the Defense Production Act, that basically allows 3M to make another 39 million N95 respirators every month in the U.S.

Moreover, additional investments have already gone underway, helping 3M add another 22 million respirators per month to that production output, nearly tripling the company’s N95 respirator production to almost 100 million per month in the U.S.

3M have invested more than 80 million dollars in increasing N95 respirator production since the outbreak started in January. Those actions, along with the new investment contracts, will enable the company to double its capacity again next year to 2 billion masks.

3M is working around the clock to help medical personnel in need get the protective equipment they require to stay safe in the nation’s frontline against COVID-19. Being selected for investment contracts allowed the company to increase manufacturing capabilities even further.

The Department of Defense has closely collaborated with them on this effort with the shared goal of protecting the American people.

How was this increase in production possible?

The ramping up of production was made possible by the addition of new equipment that can easily manufacture N95 respirators. The construction of that equipment started in Wisconsin, where the first production of respirators will start this month.

The equipment will eventually be relocated to new and better 3M facilities in Aberdeen, South Dakota. Their Aberdeen facility has been a major success in the company’s strategy for increasing production and manufacturing protective equipment for decades throughout the novel coronavirus pandemic.

Not only have 3M partnered with the federal government to increase the production of respirators, but they have also worked closely with the Trump administration to import a total of 166 million+ respirators from overseas 3M facilities in China. Those imports have started and will continue until the outbreak is over.

Do you need an N95 respirator?

The N95 face mask is a respirator that blocks a minimum of 95% of airborne particles, including viruses. They come in all shapes and sizes, and the coronavirus pandemic has seen the masks used by everyone from healthcare workers to the general public.

There are two different N95 face masks, one has a one-way air valve, and the other one doesn’t. The respirator filters the air you breathe in, protecting you from any airborne bacteria.

The N95 mask with a one-way valve keeps the respirator cool and less stuffy because it enables the air you breathe to escape more easily.

CDC reports that N95 masks with a valve also let unfiltered air escape and spread around you. That’s the only concern which made some cities to ban the use of N95 respirator.
