Are 3d printed n95 masks more effective than other n95 masks?

N95 respirator

A respiratory protective device or a particulate filter that filters out injurious airborne particles like dust, dirt, bacteria, infectious agents, and viral diseases is called an N95 respirator. It is a Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) that keeps an individual protected from harmful airborne particles of hazardous diseases like the influenza virus and the novel coronavirus. Healthcare professionals use PPE to keep them safe from injurious airborne particles while treating infected patients.

The N95 respirator filters out harmful airborne particles whose size is relatively smaller than the average airborne particles; this is why the N95 respirator is the safest Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) since it filters out harmful airborne particles of tiny sizes. 0.3um is the size of the airborne particle that can be filtered out with the use of the N95 respirators. In addition to that, the N95 respirators are more than ninety-five percent efficient at blocking harmful airborne particles of every size.

There are several countries like the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the United States of America (USA) that have manufactured N95 respirators by using the technology of 3D printing. Some things could affect an individual adversely if an N95 respirator has been manufactured by a 3D printer. These are some reasons why the conventional N95 respirator is relatively better than the 3D printed N95 respirator. One of those reasons is the facial fit of the 3D printed N95 respirator.

The facial fit of the 3D printed N95 respirator is loose, which means there is adequate space for hazardous airborne particles to enter an individual’s body. Furthermore, these harmful airborne particles can adversely affect the health of an individual if the wearer inhales these harmful airborne particles. The wearer could spread the virus among their near and dear ones if they inhale hazardous airborne particles of a contagious disease like the influenza virus and the novel coronavirus.

The 3D printed N95 respirators are not as effective and efficient as the conventional N95 respirators since they do not filter out or block as many harmful airborne particles as the conventional N95 respirator does. In addition to that, such N95 respirators should have safety certification of whether the 3D printed N95 respirator is effective against contagious viruses or not. NIOSH should be the one to test such N95 respirators and determine their effectiveness against harmful airborne particles.

NIOSH

NIOSH stands for National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, and it is responsible for checking the effectiveness of products that keep the public safe from injuries, illnesses, harmful airborne particles, and viral diseases. Furthermore, NIOSH researches the disease and recommends various methods to prevent the disease and spread it. NIOSH tests the effectiveness of a product by putting it through different tests that determine the effectiveness of the product. If a product passes these tests, NIOSH approves it.

3D printed N95 respirators are not safe for the public and healthcare professionals. If either of them ends up inhaling harmful airborne particles because of the leakage of such respirators, they could end up spreading the virus among others and their near and dear ones. The FDA has said that the 3D printed N95 respirators are not as effective in fighting off contagious diseases as the conventional N95 respirator. Therefore, the public and healthcare professionals should use conventional N95 respirators.

FDA

FDA stands for Food and Drug Administration, and it is a federal agency that determines the safety and protection of various things. Such things include biological products, cosmetic products, veterinary drugs, medicines, vaccines, and human drugs, etc. The FDA determines the safety and effectiveness of these products by putting them through strict testing. The FDA approves the product if it passes the tests; this means that the product is safe for the public, and the people should not face any hesitation while using these products.

The FDA has said a lot of bad stuff about the 3D printed N95 respirators. They said that the 3D printed N95 respirators are not as efficient as the conventional N95 respirator. Furthermore, these 3D printed N95 respirators do not limit the spread of a contagious virus. These N95 respirators cannot filter out contagious airborne particles; this could end up infecting the whole body of an individual. Therefore, the FDA does not recommend the use of 3D printed N95 respirators to combat the novel coronavirus.

It is crucial for a healthcare professional to check the effectiveness of the seal of the 3D printed N95 respirator and to look for any leakages in the N95 respirator. It has been designed to dispose of N95 respirators with a leakage; this is because leakages have got ample room for hazardous airborne particles to enter an individual’s body. Therefore, scrutinizing the 3D printed N95 respirator for leakages is indispensable.

Conclusion

The conventional N95 respirators are relatively more efficient than 3D printed N95 respirators; this is because 3D printed N95 respirators cannot limit the spread of transmissible airborne particles. Therefore, 3D printed N95 respirators are not as effective and efficient at keeping the wearer safe as the conventional N95 respirator. In addition to that, the 3D printed N95 respirators do not have a tight facial fit, which means that the wearer could end up inhaling harmful airborne particles because of a tiny leakage. Such leakages could put the wearer’s life in jeopardy. Therefore, 3D printed N95 respirators should be scrutinized for leakages before use.
