Effect of COVID-19 across the world
COVID-19 has taken over the world; it has changed the way we interact and communicate with each other. After this fatal pandemic spread across various countries in the world, it took a lot of lives, and thousands of people were infected by this deadly virus. On 11th March 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared COVID-19 as a global pandemic because of its severity and drastic spread.
To prevent this fatal disease and to keep yourself and the others protected, the governments around the world made it clear to the normal public to follow some precautionary measures. These precautionary measures were introduced by the governments to curb the fatal spread of this virus and to save and protect as many lives as possible.
These precautionary measures include: wash hands and use hand sanitizers, stay away from others and maintain social distancing, and wear N95 respirators.
The N95 respirator is a mask that filters out 95% of hazardous airborne particles; these airborne particles include pollutants, contaminants, dirt, mist, dust, infectious agents, and other life-threatening diseases as well. The N95 mask protects the wearer from inhaling hazardous airborne particles that could cause the wearer several diseases like lung cancer, heart diseases, cardiovascular diseases, and a plethora of other diseases as well.
The reason why the N95 respirators are superior to other masks or respirators is that the N95 masks can filter out 95% of airborne particles like infectious agents, dust, and dirt particles, i.e. 0.3um; droplets that are caused after a person sneezes, coughs, or talks. The N95 masks also provide better prevention than other masks. The N95 mask is the best Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) because of a lot of primary reasons; one of those reasons is because the N95 mask is affordable.
N95 respirators for elders
Hence, it has become a compulsion for people to wear N95 respirators to cope with this deadly virus. Young individuals can wear the N95 mask to keep themselves protected, but could the elderly people wear N95 respirators? If they can, is it safe for them to wear the N95 mask?
The elderly people can and ought to wear the N95 respirator to keep themselves protected from COVID-19. A review by the scientific literature found out that masks provide a shielding effect that does not let the harmful airborne particles enter into an individual’s body, lungs, or nose.
The elderly people must wear the N95 respirators to keep themselves protected from this fatal and deadly virus. The thing about COVID-19 is it is not fatal for teenagers and people within the age bracket of 5 to 30. But it is fatal and deadly for elderly people.
This is because their age is quite high, and their immune systems become weak; which means that their immune systems cannot combat deadly viruses whose fatality is of this magnitude. Hence, old people are vulnerable to COVID-19 and viruses of the same fatality or death rate.
Therefore, elderly people must wear N95 respirators and follow the likewise precautionary measures to keep themselves safe as they are the ones whose lives are in huge trouble. In Norwich, researchers from the University of East Anglia strongly recommended the elderly people to wear N95 masks.
The people, who are vulnerable to COVID-19, must wear N95 masks while traveling to supermarkets, hospitals, and other places to complete certain tasks or carry out day-to-day activities. A lot of people also questioned the quality and reliability of the mask whether they can protect an individual or not.
The best masks for protection (N95)
There are hundreds of different types of masks and respirators, and each of these masks protects an individual on several levels. There are several levels of protection of different types of masks. Some masks provide more protection, and some of them provide less protection.
Contagious viruses like influenza and COVID-19 spread in the form of droplets. Droplets of coughs and saliva are very small, and they are tinier than bacteria. Since the majority of the masks cannot filter out particles of such tiny sizes, they are not considered preferable when it comes to such diseases.
The N95 mask or respirator is the best mask for prevention against contagious diseases like COVID-19 and influenza etc. for elderly people. This is because the N95 mask filters out or blocks particles whose sizes are really small, and other masks or respirators cannot block or filter out particles of such small sizes.
There were over 31 studies that showed the N95 masks do protect an individual as well as other people from getting infected by the virus, i.e. COVID-19. Since surgical masks and other types of masks are too thin and loose, they cannot protect against health-detrimental airborne particles while the N95 masks can.
That is why the N95 masks are preferred for elderly people. Since elderly people are vulnerable to such contagious diseases, it is preferred that they wear N95 masks. The N95 masks provide sufficient protection to the elders against such harmful airborne particles that could pose a threat to an individual’s health.
Therefore, elderly people must wear N95 masks to keep themselves protected from such contagious diseases. The N95 masks do not adversely affect the health of an individual; it does the contrary. Hence, the elders can wear N95 masks and must wear N95 masks to keep themselves protected.
