Can wearing an N95 respirator make you sicker?

N95 respirator

The N95 respirator is a mask that protects the wearer or the user from harmful and dangerous airborne particles. These airborne particles include dust, dirt, pollutants, contaminants, mist, infectious agents, viral diseases, and plenty of other diseases as well. An individual could get infected by endangering airborne particles and cause diseases like lung cancer, heart diseases, cardiovascular diseases, and a plethora of other diseases if they do not wear an N95 mask.

Superiority of N95 masks over other masks

The primary reason why the N95 respirator is superior over other masks or respirators is that it can filter or block harmful airborne particles, that are the size of 0.3um, like dust, pollutants, dirt, infectious agents, and other diseases that could be detrimental to an individual’s health. Since the N95 respirator can filter out the tiniest particles and keep the wearer protected from it, it is considered the best respirator or mask available.

Significance of N95 respirators during COVID-19

During the fatal pandemic, the N95 respirator has proved their significance around the world. When the pandemic began, everyone was getting infected, and the death toll of individuals around the world was increasing at a very fast rate. The higher authorities were concerned about the health of the people.

To cope with that conundrum, one of the ways to prevent the virus was to wear N95 respirators. Hence, governments around the world strongly suggested their citizens wear the N95 respirators to keep themselves protected at all times. It has become a compulsion now for people around the world to wear N95 respirators to keep themselves protected from this deadly and fatal pandemic.

Significance of N95 masks during wildfires

The N95 masks have been crucial for the people where wildfires have broken out as well. When a wildfire breaks out, the air quality of that region deteriorates because of the smoke, and it gets arduous for the citizens to breathe. These harmful airborne particles include pollutants, contaminants, dust, dirt, smoke, and a lot of other health-detrimental particles as well.

To combat the wildfires, the higher authorities made it clear to the public to wear N95 masks and to remain indoors until the situation gets better. This is because the N95 mask prevents the wearer from inhaling harmful airborne particles that could cause major diseases like cancer, heart disease, lung diseases, and plenty of other diseases as well.

Is it possible for an N95 respirator to make you sicker?

Rumors surrounding the N95 masks

There have been several rumors going around the internet regarding the quality authenticity of N95 masks. People say that the N95 respirator makes an individual sicker. One of the rumors is that since N95 masks allow carbon dioxide to accumulate inside the mask, it can make you a little sicker.

Breathing in carbon dioxide means hypercapnia, and it is a medical term for inhaling CO2. The symptoms of inhaling carbon dioxide include dizziness, headache, breathing problems, lightheadedness, fatigue, and many other health-related problems. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)'s representative stated that the level of carbon dioxide does increase in the mask for a while.

However, it does not cause any conundrum to the health of the wearer. The wearer does not experience the aforementioned symptoms. Hence, it does not adversely affect the health of an individual, and it is not detrimental to an individual’s health. However, wearing the N95 mask for a prolonged time might cause headaches to an individual. Otherwise, it will be fine.

One of those rumors also includes that wearing an N95 mask can weaken a person’s immune system. However, it was cleared by a medical pharmacy from the United States that the N95 mask does not weaken an individual’s immune system; it does the contrary. It protects the user from contracting harmful diseases like COVID-19, SARS, flu, and a plethora of other diseases as well.

Another rumor was that the N95 masks could give panic attacks to an individual, which is not true. The N95 mask does not give panic attacks to anyone. Hence, N95 masks do not adversely affect an individual’s health. The majority of these baseless claims are just rumors about N95 masks that do not have any evidence at all.

Conclusion

Using N95 masks for a long time could make the user or the wear uncomfortable, but it does not cause either CO2 intoxications or oxygen deficiencies. While wearing the N95 mask, make sure the N95 mask fits properly to your face, and it is tight enough to let you breathe without any difficulties.

However, the wearer or the user of N95 masks must dispose of the N95 respirator after using it. Although the N95 respirator could cause headaches, it does not adversely affect the health of an individual, and the usage of the N95 respirator does not make an individual sicker.
