Comparison of 8210 and 1860 N95 masks

An N95 mask is a type of disposable air-filtering respirator that can filter particles of more than 0.3 microns. From the name itself, an N95 mask or respirator has a filtering efficiency of 95%, filtering tiny airborne particles and non-oil based contaminants in the immediate surroundings.

Commonly, N95 masks have industrial applications. There are different types of N95 masks made suitable for construction, mining, manufacturing, food processing, agriculture, and a lot more. There are also some models that are meant for medical use.

In recent times, where the coronavirus affected the whole world, medical types of N95 masks are very in demand. In the United States alone, there is an increasing demand for N95 masks and the supply is not enough. As a result, the CDC and FDA issued guidance on the reuse and extended use of the N95 masks. The FDA also provides approval to some KN95 mask models for emergency use.

3M as a brand

When it comes to N95 masks, 3M is one of the leading brands trusted by most people. The brand has been around for years and is known for its durable, quality, and efficient protective gear and devices. 3M is a NIOSH-approved brand and is allowed to manufacture and distribute different models and types of N95 masks for both medical and industrial fields.

Among the popular models of 3M N95 masks are the 3M 8210 N95 mask and the 3M 1860 N95 mask. These 3M N95 masks are different from each other - the 8210 model is meant for industrial use while the 1860 model is meant for medical use.

3M 8210 vs 3M 1860 N95 masks

Here is how the 3M 8210 model differs from the 1860 model:

3M 8210 N95 respirator

The 3M 8210 particulate respirator is a NIOSH-approved mask that has a 95% filtering efficiency. This mask is not resistant to flame and not resistant to any fluid contaminants. It has a two-strap design with a welded dual point attachment. This is specifically designed for a secure and closed seal. It comes with a nose foam cushioning for added comfort. The N95 mask has a lightweight design for greater worker acceptance and increased wear time. It also features advanced electrostatic media for easy breathing.

The 3M 8210 N95 mask is effective in filtering dust and other airborne particles but it can't provide protection against oil-based elements. This mask is recommended or suitable to be used in the construction, food safety, general manufacturing, mining, transportation, and food processing industries.

Despite its industrial design, this N95 mask is approved by the FDA to be used by healthcare workers in the medical setting to protect them from the coronavirus. However, the 8210 N95 masks are not cleared by the FDA as a surgical mask. When used during surgical operations, the 8210 N95 masks should be worn along with a face shield.

3M 1860 N95 respirator

The 3M 1860 N95 mask is an air-filtering respirator that is approved by the FDA to be used as a surgical mask. It features advanced electrostatic media for easy breathing. It has nose foam cushioning and a class 1 flammability rating. The 3M 1860 N95 mask is fluid-resistant as per ASTM F1862. Since it is fluid-resistant it is suitable for operating room use, protecting the wearer from any blood spatter and any other bodily fluid. The 3M 1860 N95 mask is a disposable mask that also protects the wearer from certain airborne biological particles.

The 1860 N95 mask meets the CDC standard for Mycobacterium tuberculosis exposure control. It has 99% bacterial Filtration Efficiency (BFE) as per ASTM F2101.

The mask comes with a collapsible resistant cup. It has braided headbands and lightweight constructions for comfortable wear.

To summarize, the 3M 8210 N95 mask is not suitable to be used as a surgical mask, unlike the 1860 N95 mask model. The 8210 model is not resistant to blood and other bodily fluid.
