Do nursing homes require N95 respirators

N95 respirator

The N95 mask is a respirator that filters out or blocks hazardous airborne particles; these airborne particles include dust, dirt, pollutants, contaminants, mist, infectious agents, viral diseases, and plenty of other hazardous particles. Such harmful airborne particles could be harmful to an individual’s health.

The N95 mask protects the user or wearer from inhaling such hazardous airborne particles that could cause life-threatening diseases like lung diseases, heart diseases, and a plethora of other diseases. The N95 mask is also known as the N95 respirator, and the N95 mask also provides adequate protection to the wearer than other masks.

The primary reason why the other respirators or masks are inferior to N95 masks is that the N95 respirators can prevent the wearer from inhaling harmful airborne particles that are smaller than 0.3um; droplets that are caused after a person sneezes, talks, or coughs.

The N95 mask is the best Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):

The N95 mask has been considered the best Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) because it provides enormous protection against harmful and hazardous particles. The weight of the N95 mask is light, and it provides significant protection. The N95 mask is effective at filtering out 95% of the hazardous and harmful airborne particles, and it can easily be bought at an affordable price. Since the N95 mask is affordable, it provides value for money that other personal protective equipment cannot give.

Significance of N95 respirators during calamitous events

The N95 respirators have proved their significance during the pandemic and wildfires. The N95 masks have been fruitful to deal with each of these conundrums. If an infected individual comes in contact with another person without knowing about the virus, the other individual breathes in the virus.

This would eventually increase in COVID-19 cases, and the magnitude of the pandemic would never vanquish. However, the N95 masks protect at an affordable or low cost, which results in more people buying the N95 masks to keep themselves safe as well as the others protected.

Do nursing homes require N95 respirators?

Yes, nursing homes require N95 respirators; nursing homes are small institutions where nurses provide healthcare to elders or people whose ages are above 60. These institutions have been developed for such individuals to cope with and to take care of elderly people.

Nursing homes do require N95 respirators to take care of patients who have been infected by COVID-19. If there are no N95 respirators, nurses would not be able to take care of the infected patients and if they do take care of infected patients, nurses would contract this contagious virus, i.e. COVID-19.

This would in turn result in an increase in COVID-19 cases, which does not suppress the spread of this virus. It does the contrary. Therefore, nursing homes must have N95 respirators in ample proportions to cope with infected patients and treat them while not being invulnerable.

Healthcare workers who are treating COVID-19 patients since the pandemic began require N95 respirators to take care of the infected patients. If an individual comes in contact with a COVID-19 infected patient, that individual would get infected as the harmful airborne particles would enter the individual’s body, nose, or lungs.

Since the healthcare providers treat COVID-19 patients, the higher authorities must provide the healthcare workers with the N95 respirators of the highest quality. This is to ensure that healthcare workers are protected while treating infected COVID-19 patients.

Shortage of N95 respirators

There is an acute shortage of N95 respirators in the United States of America (USA). 3M, which is the biggest N95 respirator manufacturer of the United States, can manufacture around 40 million N95 respirators per month while a recent study showed that the United States of America would at least require 3.5 billion N95 masks to make it through the pandemic or to survive the pandemic.

60% of nursing homes in every state of America are facing an acute shortage of the most crucial Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), i.e. the N95 respirator. Nearly 3000 nursing homes faced a severe shortage of N95 masks, and 680 nursing homes did not have the N95 masks.

There was a mother of two daughters who got infected by COVID-19. The mother was old; therefore, she was admitted to a nursing home to get herself treated. When the daughters came to the nursing home to meet their mother, one of them contracted COVID-19. They said that the hospital did not provide any N95 respirators to them to keep themselves safe while meeting their mother.

Depleting healthcare infrastructure of the United States

This shows the depleting health infrastructure of the United States. It has been more than 6 months now since the pandemic began, but the United States, which has the largest economy in the world, could not manufacture enough N95 respirators for its citizens and healthcare professionals. On the contrary, the situation deteriorated, and the country now needs a large amount of N95 masks to cope with this conundrum, i.e. COVID-19.

As a result of the national shortage of N95 respirators, healthcare workers of nursing homes and other healthcare institutions have to put their lives on the line and to increase their exposure to the COVID-19 patients to treat them. Therefore, nursing homes do require N95 respirators and are in a severe need of them because of the infected patients. N95 respirators are the most important parts of the healthcare industry and the general public, so they are used in the most quantities.
