Do surgical masks cause acne on the face?

Surgical Masks

Health experts and medical care personnel wear surgical masks. Surgical masks are known as masks or face covers for health professions. It has been used by health professionals throughout the operation cycle. In particular, surgical masks are planned for clinical characters to protect them from body liquid sprinkles, not like N95. Yet this cover still has the consistency to protect against infectious flu diseases as well.

Do surgical masks cause acne on the face?

I discovered how uncomfortable wearing a mask for a long period could be when we traveled or worked outside for four to eight hours. Yeah, it was completely important, and we will never forget it but our breath was stinky, and our upper lip was continuously coated with a thin layer of sweat.

When leaving home, the coronavirus epidemic has intensified the use of surgical and non-medical safety masks. Sadly, the excessive use of face masks for sensitive and/or acne-prone skin is a common cause of acne breakouts.

We must find ways to integrate them effectively as an important part of our lives in the present and near future. Fortunately, a new form of 3-layer fabric mask impregnated with copper and liver particles seems to be able to reduce the number of acne breakouts associated with the COVID face mask.

How Can Protective Masks Cause More Acne?

Under a mask, breathing in and out increases the temperature and humidity of the covered areas of the skin, providing a perfect atmosphere for breeding bacteria. Constant rubbing against the skin is caused by wearing a mask, scratching the outer protective layer.

The resulting vulnerable and weakened skin allows the bacteria to penetrate deep into clogged oil glands easily on its surface, causing increased inflammation and breakouts of acne.

Single-use surgical masks cause acne the most

It is misleading to name a non-woven fabric. Some are made of other synthetic materials, such as polystyrene, polycarbonate, polyethylene, or polyester, and most single-use masks are made of polypropylene.

Polypropylene is a plastic substance that is synthetic, similar to the polyethylene in our garbage bags. A hot melted plastic that is pressed into form begins the production process of those single-use masks. It is cooled afterward and the straps are welded into place, sterilizing the masks.

Under the mask, this very dense synthetic material absorbs moisture and heat, providing a perfect breeding ground for bacteria and fungi. These plastic surgical masks are a serious environmental threat, in addition to causing more acne.

They dump tiny harmful microplastic particles into the water, which are then eaten by the fish and then by us as we consume seafood. It is difficult to recycle single-use masks. They are made of a complex blend of synthetic materials requiring specific and costly recycling machinery.

Since it costs more than the value of the resulting recycled content to obtain, separate, and recycle single-use masks, there is no business motivation to recycle those masks.

How do we protect ourselves from acne?

Under a mask, breathing in and out increases the temperature and humidity of the covered areas of the skin, providing a perfect atmosphere for breeding bacteria. Constant rubbing against the skin is caused by wearing a mask, scratching the outer protective layer. The resulting vulnerable and weakened skin allows the bacteria to penetrate deep into clogged oil glands easily on its surface, causing increased inflammation and breakouts of acne.

Cleanse and moisturize the skin right after you remove the mask. Moisturizers based on gels and water are lightweight and can avoid clogged pores. To help smooth your skin and heal the signs of friction and discomfort, look for a moisturizer with aloe Vera and tea tree oil.

While you wear a reusable mask, discard it and wear a new one every day after wearing it. Clean it every day if you are using a reusable mask.

Touch the mask as little as possible with your hands. Immediately afterward, always wash your hands if you touch the protective mask. Do not use masks that are very tight. Without being too constricting, you want the mask to be close enough to your skin to remain in place.

With a gentle cleanser, wash your face 2-3x a day. If you have acne, look for a salicylic acid mild medicated cream-based cleanser to extract oil effectively.

If your skin is oily, to eliminate excess oil and sweat that can collect under your mask during the day, you can use oil-free wipes or blotting paper.

As your breathing is more limited, elastic fabric masks and single-use surgical masks create a more humid, hotter atmosphere for your skin. Underneath the mask, the accumulation of sweat and oil can cause inflammation, rashes, and acne breakouts. Natural cotton masks are much safer.

Under your mask, wear minimal to no makeup. Try to avoid heavy foundations and concealers, which can lead to increased breakouts and clogged pores.

Petroleum (Vaseline) must not be added to your skin. This strong thick ointment can block your pores of the skin and trigger further mask breakouts frequently. Using a soft, oil-free moisturizer that is anti-acne instead.

Before you put your mask on, wait 15 minutes after applying the moisturizer. The seal isn't going to work as well if your skin is slick. Try not to wear lip gloss; the mask appears to stick to the lip gloss. Instead, opt for a lip cream or a waxy lip conditioner.
