A mechanical engineer and fluid dynamicist at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, Matthew Staymates is researching various types of masks to decide which are most effective in reducing the transmission of diseases.
He explains investigating the basic flow dynamics of N95 masks with or without exhalation valves in Physics of Fluids, from AIP Publishing. To do this, he produces amazing video from his schlieren picture, a method of visualizing the fluid flow away from an object's surface and dispersing light.
The N95 mask exhalation valve is designed to improve user comfort by reducing resistance to filtration during exhalation.
Basically, Staymates said, “It is a small flap that opens up when exhaling, which allows air out without filtering through the material of the mask. I was able to visually illustrate the operation of this exhalation valve and compare it to an N95 that does not have this valve”.
Staymates said his research demonstrated that N95 masks with an exhalation valve are not sufficient masks to flush out a person's escaping respiratory droplets. He said, “Our basic interpretation is that COVID-19 is transferred partly by respiratory droplets, so N95s with valves are not suitable for source control during this pandemic”.
He discovered that N95 masks without valves are successful at preventing the penetration of most droplets through the mask material.
Inside his woodshop, Staymates designed an elaborate stay-at-home lab to test various mask styles and materials. To calculate his own breathing flow profile, he developed an artificial exhalation system to replicate the exhalation flow pattern of a real person and a personalized pneumotachograph. He used this data for the artificial exhale method as a standard.
The University of California at Los Angeles about exhalation valve functions
A device was developed by Bellin and Hinds of the University of California at Los Angeles to evaluate the effect of the compromised role of the exhalation valve on a particular aerosol penetration of particle size through exhalation valves. On the exhalation valve of the MSA Comfo-II half-mask respirator that was sealed to a mannikin, aerosol penetration was measured.
For research, aerosol particles were selected with a mass median aerodynamic diameter (MMAD) of 0.5, 2.4, and 8 um. Copper wires having various thicknesses were put in direct contact with the exhalation valve seat in order to simulate valve defects in a controlled fashion. The order of magnitude of these wires is the same as human hair.
Tests were performed on their outer surface using valves contaminated by paint. The output of the mask was measured by calculating aerosol concentration simultaneously inside and outside the facepiece.
The test results showed that the aerosol penetration of the sub micrometer was very poor for normal valves. The aerosol penetration of valves that had been coated with paint spray was substantially increased. The authors concluded that the test results agreed with the LASL studies that very little inward leakage was permitted by properly working exhalation valves.
If exhalation valves are dirty or deformed, or if fibers or foreign materials have become stuck between the valve and the seat of the valve, severe leakage can occur.
Why are face masks with valves not recommended for protection against the coronavirus?
These types of masks do not shield others from coronavirus, according to the Mayo Clinic, as the one-way valve that enables unfiltered air to be released when the wearer exhales suggests that the wearer can transmit the virus as easily as not wearing a mask.
