How did 3M- A multinational conglomerate company rise to the top of the market?

3M

Based in Minnesota, the United States of America, 3M is a multinational conglomerate company which operates in innumerable fields. These fields include the United States healthcare, electronic and energy, adhesives, and consumer goods, etc. 3M has been swift in tackling this global pandemic through providing important Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to physicians, nurses, doctors, and other healthcare professionals to treat the patients who have been infected by COVID-19.

Furthermore, 3M has provided an immense amount of N95 respirators in the public to fight the novel coronavirus. 3M is the largest conglomerate company for manufacturing N95 respirators. 3M has worked arduously in 2020 and provided Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to doctors, physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals. There are several products that 3M manufactures.

Those products include N95 respirators, disinfectants, surgical masks, hand sanitizers, gloves, face shields, and a plethora of other goods as well. The role of 3M in protecting the people around the world and the people of the United States of America (USA) has been sensational. When the pandemic hit the United States, 3M was the first manufacturer that started manufacturing and selling N95 respirators.

At the start of the pandemic, 400 million N95 respirators have been sold to the public of the United States and around 800 million N95 respirators to the public around the world in the first half of 2020. It has been predicted that the sales of N95 respirators of 3M will have reached two billion by the start of 2021. Everyone has benefited from the N95 respirators that were sold by 3M.

A lot of people prefer respirators that were manufactured by 3M; this is because the quality of the N95 respirators is astoundingly exceptional. Moreover, the main features of the N95 respirator are comfortability, durability, breathability, and effectiveness. 3M has risen to the top of the market by achieving innumerable milestones.

3M manufactures products that an individual usually needs in their daily lives; it manufactures products like tapes, scrubs, and sandpaper, etc. The revenue of 3M was around 33 billion dollars in 2019. This is how that company rose to the top.

Andrew Rehder received a call from 3M’s headquarters on 21st January 2020. He called around 20 supervisors and managers to gather in a conference room where they discussed COVID-19 without being concerned about their health. They discussed a virus that broke out in Wuhan, China, and the demand for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) might increase.

3M had already manufactured a large amount of N95 respirators because of the wildfires that were wreaking havoc in Australia. Since it is hard for an individual to breathe in Australia because of the smoke, pollutants, and contaminants, there was a severe need for N95 respirators and other crucial Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

Since they were manufacturing N95 respirators for Australia, there were ample amounts of N95 respirators in bulk when COVID-19 hit the United States. When COVID-19 had hit the United States, the companies were not ready for COVID-19. They had not known about the severity of COVID-19 when it hit the United States.

When it hit the United States, 3M was the only manufacturer that had a large amount of N95 respirators. Therefore, the public of the United States bought N95 respirators from 3M, which increased the sales of 3M. The pandemic spread across various states in the United States, and the demand for N95 respirators exponentially grew.

Therefore, 3M kept selling N95 respirators at a fast rate because of such an immense demand for it. All of the N95 respirators that were left because of Australia’s wildfires had been bought by the public of the United States because of COVID-19. After observing the demand for the product, 3M started manufacturing N95 respirators at a fast pace to fulfill the requirement of the public of the United States.

Because of the pandemic, more people started purchasing N95 respirators. Because of such a large amount of sales, 3M sold the most amount of N95 respirators in the United States, which is around 400 million N95 respirators in the first half of 2020. Furthermore, another reason why the N95 respirators of 3M were sold was because of the overall quality of the N95 respirators. While manufacturing N95 respirators at a fast pace, 3M did not compromise with the quality of the N95 respirators, which is a good thing!

In addition to that, the price of the N95 respirators of 3M was low, which means that the product provides value for money to the wearer. Since it has become a compulsion for everyone to wear N95 respirators, 3M manufactured effective yet cheap products for the public and healthcare professionals of the United States. 3M knew that everyone required an N95 respirator, and they manufactured a product for everyone, be it poor or rich.

Because of this thinking, 3M managed to sell millions of N95 respirators in 2020, and it has been expected that 3M will have sold one billion N95 respirators by the end of 2020; this is how 3M rose to the top of the market by selling N95 respirators and other crucial Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to deal with the pandemic. No company has sold as many N95 respirators as 3M, and 3M will have made around 2 billion dollars by selling N95 respirators until the end of 2020.
