Is There A Global N95 Mask Shortage?

N95 masks, N95 respirators, and other personal protective equipment have been the focus of many individuals since the beginning of the pandemic. A lot of people all over the world want to get access to the right N95 masks, N95 respirators, and other personal protective equipment but the reality is that there is a global shortage of the product.

In this article let us discuss the most important aspects of the shortage, what you can do to help, and the important aspects of our current reality.

The Shortage of The N95 Masks

The shortage of the N95 masks, N95 respirators, and other personal protective equipment is now a problem that is the focus of discussion for the past 9 months of this pandemic. While it is true that people need to work on their own supplies, as in countries need to work out their own needs, the reality is that we are all in this together. The shortage that we are experiencing in the N95 masks, N95 respirators, and other personal protective equipment is not only limited to a shortage of N95 masks, N95 respirators, and other personal protective equipment in the United States but is a problem globally.

Who Should Be Prioritized?

Given the current shortage of the N95 masks, N95 respirators, and other personal protective equipment, there is a certain part of the population that should be prioritized and they are the following:

  • Medical Frontliners;
  • Vulnerable Age Groups;
  • People Taking Care Of Vulnerable Age Groups;
  • People Who Work In Retail; and
  • Essential Healthcare Workers.

Of course, these are the priority groups but given that there is already community transmission of the virus, every person is now considered as part of the priority group of the virus.

What Can You Do To Help?

There are a couple of things that you can do to help with the N95 mask shortage and they are listed below:

Make Sure That You Have Just Enough Supply.

When you buy N95 masks, N95 respirators, and other personal protective equipment, you should make sure that you have just enough supply.

It is your responsibility to make sure that you and your family would have the supplies you need to live your daily life but it is also your responsibility to make sure that the priority population will not miss out on the current supply while the manufacturers are continuously trying to keep up with the demand. To help out, you should ensure that you have just the right supplies of N95 masks, N95 respirators, and other personal protective equipment to help you out.

Wear Surgical Masks When Not Exposed To Too Many People

Even if you have some N95 masks, N95 respirators, and other personal protective equipment in stock, it helps if you can maximize their use by wearing surgical masks. Surgical masks are still medical grade masks that can help you with preventing your exposure to the virus. The difference is that when you use a surgical mask you are not taking away a piece of the supplies from the priority population towards you and your community. If you were not in a big exposure such as if you do not work in retail for you are not exposed to people who may be exposed to the virus, a surgical mask should be enough to protect you from transmission of the virus.

Donate If You Have The Capacity

You can donate N95 masks, N95 respirators, and other personal protective equipment if you have the capacity. There are a lot of online stores for you to look at when you were looking at donating N95 masks, N95 respirators, and other personal protective equipment to the hospitals and medical facilities. If you do have a capacity and you want to help, this is the best way for you to do so because these hospitals and these medical facilities are facing a problem and are in the front lines to make sure that for their community transmission of the virus is stopped on the steps.

Share Cloth Masks To Those In Need

If you can, you can create your own cloth masks and donate them to those in need. The homeless people in your community or the individuals who do not have the capacity to buy surgical masks, N95 masks, N95 respirators, and other personal protective equipment could benefit greatly from cloth masks as if they still provide them the protection that we need against this virus. If you are able to stop transmission of the virus from one person to another, you are already doing your part in protecting yourself and your family.

Your Part Is In Taking Care Of Yourself

At the end of the day, your part as a member of society is to take care of yourself. Make sure that you get the right N95 masks, N95 respirators, and other personal protective equipment and that you follow all of the set health and safety protocols. You are responsible for your own part in this pandemic. If you do your share and follow all of the necessary requirements for you not to get the virus, you will also be helping out the hospitals and the organization trying to control the virus from this further getting to more and more homes. Community transmission is now our problem and it is necessary for us to make sure that we take care of ourselves and everybody we love against this virus.
