History has been kind on one of the most reliable sources of personal protective equipment like N95 masks and N95 respirators. 3M is indeed one of the most reliable sources that healthcare workers, professionals, and the general population  should know more about and should rely on.

With that, let us focus on the history and the expansion of 3M’s multinational conglomerate company from a simple company to one of the world’s most reliable sources of personal protective equipment like N95 masks and N95 respirators.

The History of 3M

3M comes from the most humble beginnings. A lot of people should know about how this company came from being a local brand to getting one of the best sources of personal protective equipment like N95 masks and N95 respirators.

3M began in the year 1902. It had five founders whose main goal was to mine for corundum. Dr. J. Danley Budd, Henry. S. Bryan, William A. McGonagle, John Dwan and Hermon W. Cable created the company on Two Harbors, Minnesota and it was known back then as Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company.

The Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company aimed to mind and find corundum. Unfortunately, they found a low-grade mineral called anorthosite. Because of the poor quality mineral, they had to innovate and this innovation is said to have been one of the most important characteristics that was inherited and made a pillar by the company up to this day.

By the year 1905, 3M is already making ground into becoming one of the best and one of the most important providers of personal protective equipment like N95 masks and N95 respirators today. They constructed their first manufacturing building that aimed to look at creating a two-story sandpaper plant. Unfortunately, the then lack of experience of the company caused the floor of their building to collapse from the weight of the company’s newly purchased raw materials. This was a hard lesson that the company had to learn.

By the year 1907, the company was under new leadership. The Future 3M President and Chairman of the Board, William L. McKnight had joined Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Co. as an assistant bookkeeper. His humble beginnings were much like the humble beginnings of the company. This man would later become known for shaping the company’s culture of innovation and collaboration. This year became the beginning of 3M becoming a beacon of hope for those in need of personal protective equipment like N95 masks and N95 respirators.

By the year 1914, the 3M™ Three-M-ite™ Abrasive Cloth became 3M’s first exclusive product. This is the start of innovation and exclusive products that 3M created not just for the company but for many people as well. This innovation was very important as individuals know that they need to provide the best information and get the right products across especially during the time that war was impending.

All thanks to the Three-M-ite cloth and a boost in business from World War I, 3M had posted very substantial profits and declared its first dividend so not only was the United States equipped with their war equipment but the business was really booming. Eventually, a new headquarters office was established in St. Paul, Minnesota and a first laboratory was established to test product quality that would come out of 3M.

Of course, it took a few years to go global. By the year 1951, the company had gone global and had established its International Division and new international companies were created in other countries such as in Brazil, France, Australia, Canada, Germany, the United Kingdom, and in Mexico.

By the year 1956, 3M had officially entered the fabrics industry and introduced Scotchgard™ Fabric and Upholstery Protector to the textile industry. In a few more years after, 3M had entered the market for industrial use scotch brite which was a new application for the non-woven product and another patent of 3M.

By the year 1969, 3M had surpassed global expectations and was already venturing into space by creating 3M products that are used by astronauts in the first moon landing. This includes the 3M™ Fluorel™ Elastomer which is a synthetic rubber used in the astronaut’s boots worn inside the space capsule.

By the year 2014, the company had reached an innovation milestone with the issuance of its 100,000th patent. This meant that every year about 3,000 patents are issued to 3M worldwide, with more than 500 granted in the United States. 3M owns a lot of patents and has made sure that they will get the best information available and create the best possible products for the global population.

By the year 2020, 3M has become one of the most important suppliers that people should know more about. They have created the best and the most important personal protective equipment like N95 masks and N95 respirators that individuals should know more about.
