What are the types of N95 masks sold by Honeywell?

It seems like the COVID-19 pandemic caught the United States unprepared. Even though many other countries were already starting to face the devastating consequences of this terrible virus, the USA wasn’t prepared for the rising numbers we started to see in March. The main focus during this situation has been N95 masks, a topic of discussion we didn’t see coming.

This item became one of the most valuable and sought out products, with people buying them in bulk or wholesale, looking for it everywhere. The internet became the place to buy these masks when shortages started to hit physical stores. And, eventually, these shortages began to affect healthcare centers all over the country.

A very dangerous situation was approaching the United States since healthcare workers need these masks to be able to work safely. They are not like regular medical or surgical masks; they are much more effective for virus protection. This is why a potential shortage of this product is very concerning when it comes to our healthcare workers.

Honeywell has been one of the top N95 mask producers not only in the United States, but all over the world too. They’ve been working hard to make sure the country has enough supplies, that’s why they sell several N95 masks. Let’s talk about them.

The importance of N95 masks

You’ve probably heard about this disposable face mask everywhere, but do you know what it is and why it’s so valuable? This product has been sold out in many stores, either physical or online. This is due to the excellent antiviral properties of this respirator, which make it the best piece of personal protective equipment (PPE) frontline workers have right now, especially healthcare providers.

The first thing you need to know about this mask is that its name comes from a classification made by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, also known as NIOSH. This institute is in charge of preventing any work-related injury or illness, and as such, they regulate PPE, including N95 masks.

According to this classification, NIOSH classifies respirators taking into account two characteristics: resistance to oil and the minimum particulate filtration efficacy. In the case of N95 respirators, they are not resistant to oil and filter out at least 95% of all airborne particles. This way, these masks can protect anyone who uses them against harmful particles like dust, smoke, or viruses, like the one that causes the flu.

For this reason, every disposable face mask that is marketed as an N95 mask has to be approved by NIOSH. And, if the N95 mask is being sold as medical equipment, apart from the NIOSH approval they also need approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Any mask that doesn’t have these approval stamps are fake.

Lastly, it’s important to point out that, because these masks are so effective at virus protection, they need to be prioritized for people who are in high-risk situations. Workers like healthcare providers, or any other type of essential worker that is faced with a very high risk of infection needs to use this mask to ensure they’re staying safe while they work for our needs. The general public can use regular disposable face masks or reusable cloth face masks, and leave the most effective ones to people who can’t stay socially distanced or who are near confirmed or suspicious cases.

About Honeywell and what they’ve done to help during the pandemic

Honeywell was first founded in 1905 by Mark Charles Honeywell as a heating and sanitary work company, selling mainly hot water heating systems and thermostats. Even though they’re still known for these products today, the company has changed a lot over the years, and are now selling N95 masks as well.

The company is currently called Honeywell International, Inc, and they manufacture a wide range of PPE as well. With headquarters in Santa Ana, California, they are the first competitor against 3M for N95 masks not only in the United States, but worldwide, particularly since the pandemic started at the beginning of the year.

Their PPE is not limited to the medical field, and they produce supplies for several work fields. They manufacture products for protection against chemicals, vapors, gas, and many types of airborne particles, like N95 masks. N95 respirators are their most requested item right now, as they are extremely valuable everywhere.

With the world and the country facing imminent shortages that could be fatal for healthcare workers, Honeywell has helped by increasing their N95 mask production. They created a new line of N95 mask production in Smithfield, Rhode Island. All of the masks produced there are delivered to the US Department of Health and Human Services to contribute to the national stockpile for emergency and frontline workers.

This production line has created more than 500 jobs so far, and was created according to the plan the government is implementing to increase domestic production of N95 masks. This will ensure private American companies are prioritizing the national supply of these valuable items.
