What does the CDC say about 3M N95 masks?

CDC has recommended extended use and limited reuse of NIOSH-certified N95 masks.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the Department of Health and Human Services' major operating components. CDC works to protect America from health, safety, and security threats, both foreign and the US. If a disease starts at home or abroad, it could be chronic or acute, curable and preventable, human error or deliberate attack; CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same. CDC works to increase the health security of the nation and save lives from all sorts of threats. CDC uses critical science and provides health information that protects the nation against expensive and dangerous health threats. Thus it is evident that CDC works to protect the nation from the threats and spread of coronavirus.

CDC and coronavirus-

CDC has reviewed the complete situation of coronavirus and its spread. It has been stated on its official website that the virus spreads from person to person. Thus there should be no close contact between two people; people need to wear masks to protect themselves from an infected person’s cough, sneeze, breaths, and sighs. People who don’t have symptoms can also spread the virus to others. Constant washing of hands and using sanitizers can kill the virus and protect the person from getting infected from the virus. CDC recommends wearing masks to cover the mouth and nose when around other people. CDC mentions that kids below the age of two need not wear the masks. It also states that people who have breathing issues or cannot open the mask themselves or people while doing physical activities need not wear the mask. However, other people around them or working as their healthcare provider need to wear a mask when around them. It highly recommends that when outside, you need to maintain six feet distance. CDC also states that general masses should not wear masks or other  PPE meant for the healthcare workers and essential service providers should not be worn by the general masses. It claims that surgical masks and N95 respirators that are critical supplies should be reserved for healthcare workers and first responders. CDC states that while you are coughing or sneezing, cover your mouth. Importantly, do not spit and throw the used tissues in the dustbin. Also, the masks that are meant for single-use need to be discarded after a single use. CDC states that throw the mask after putting it in a plastic bag. Throwing the mask in the open can read to the spread of disease. CDC has declared that coronavirus is the biggest pandemic that has hit humanity. CDC clearly states that it is only self-isolation and quarantine to stop the spread of the disease.

What are N95 masks?

N95 masks are a type of respirator that offers more protection than a surgical mask as it filters out both large and small particles when the wearer inhales the air. It has the number 95 attached to it as it blocks 95% of microscopic particles. An N95 respirator provides a very close facial fit thus, it effectively filters the airborne particles. The design of the mask is such that the edges form a seal around the nose and mouth. It is a multi-layered mask made with handwoven fabric so that it helps to breathe air accurately without letting you struggle to breathe.

What are 3M N95 face masks?

3M 95 masks and the N95 masks are the same with just a few differences. 3M N95 respirators are created with microfiber technology to protect against several airborne particles and droplets. All 3M N95 masks are tested and approved by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). 3M N95 masks are the most comfortable masks that are most suitable for long time wear. It has a design that gives you space to breathe and has edges that don’t push against your cheeks. Apart from the NIOSH, the FDA separately cleared it as medical devices. NIOSH has approved that the N95 masks need to provide 95% filtration efficiency against non-oil particles. It needs to have a cushioned nose foam. The basic difference between a 3M N95 mask and an N95 mask is  an 1870 model, and the other is an 1860 model. The 3M N95 mask has a two-strap design welded dual points attached to help the mask stay in its place. It is lightweight, and thus, it makes them more comfortable. CDC further claims that the masks are meant for single-use, and as there is a scarcity of the masks, one can reuse them but only after sanitizing it thoroughly to avoid any risk of getting infected.

How to differentiate between a fake and genuine 3M N95 respirator?

The market is flooded with counterfeit 3M N95 face masks. CDC recommends that before buying the 3M N95 masks, be sure that you buy a real one. Although it also states that on ethical grounds and owing to the situation these masks should be kept in reserve only for

Medical workers as they are in more need of the masks. Secondly make sure that the manufacturer or the seller from whom you are obtaining the mask should be registered on the official site of NIOSH and CDC. It also states that there are ways whereby you can ascertain that the mask that you are procuring is real. It is done by checking the name of NIOSH on the mask. Checking the serial number, lot number, national stock number expiry date and other small details to ascertain a genuine product.
