What Does the FDA Say About the N95 Mask Shortage?

It has always been one of the most important aspects of life for people to know if the resources that they have are still available. The availability of products and the fact that individuals always want to have their own stocks is an economic and practical choice for many. In today’s world, the same applies to the N95 Masks, N95 respirators, and all other personal protective equipment. People are really concerned about the supply and that is for a good reason.

In this article, let us look at why there is a shortage of N95 Mask and what the FDA has to say about it. In your own household, what can you do to make sure that you help the world in the N95 Mask shortage?

What Does The FDA Say About The N95 Mask Shortage?

The N95 Mask is one of the biggest challenges that the FDA had to face this 2020. Together with all of the other government agencies, the FDA was forced to go back to the drawing board and make sure that they will be able to address the problem as it comes.

What Steps Has The Government Taken To Address The N95 Mask Shortage?

Of course, the steps taken by the FDA can also be fully explained by stating the situation and what really happened during the peak of the shortage..

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an order stating that there is now an Emergency Use Authorization in the United States. This aims to work diligently to mitigate any potential shortages in the supply chain and take action to assure that all of the health care professionals and the experts can mitigate any potential shortages and problems that come along the way.

Generally, every health care professional expects to have their own N95 masks and everything that they need that are approved by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) as appropriate to protect the public health or safety. However, this is not always the case as the Emergency Use Authorization allows for non-NIOSH approved products to get used and to be imported from other countries.

With that, the following are the turn of events that occurred this 2020:

  • It was on March 24, 2020 when the FDA issued an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA). This EUA was necessary in order to allow the importation of non-NIOSH-approved N95 respirators and N95 masks.
  • The FDA accepted standards from specific countries as long as they were similar to that of the United States NIOSH standards. Some of these countries included Brazil, Australia, Europe, Mexico, Japan, and Korea.
  • On June 6, 2020, the FDA reissued the two EUA again which aims to cover imported respirators by tightening criteria. This included the coverage on Non-NIOSH-Approved Disposable Filtering Facepiece Respirators Manufactured in China as well as in the Imported, Non-NIOSH-Approved Disposable Filtering Facepiece Respirators.
  • On April 3, 2020, the FDA issued a new EUA for non-NIOSH-approved N95 respirators made in China.

These steps helped the current supply chain and has been one of the biggest aids that the current administration has done to help address the big N95 mask shortage. But, that is not enough. In the next selection, let us discuss what households can do to help the society as a whole and help the supply chain.

What Can You Do At Home To Help The N95 Mask Shortage?

The N95 Mask shortage is no joke. It has always been one of the worst things that could happen especially during this time of a pandemic when everybody needs to have their own N95 Mask. To help with the N95 Mask shortage, you should be able to do the following things:

  • Make Sure That You Have A Good Stock. Having your own supply of N95 masks and N95 respirators is the best way for you to make sure that you helped in the shortage. You did not even need to have a lot of supplies to at least have the right amount that would help you with your family and ends, go out, and talk to your community without worrying about getting the virus.
  • Always Keep In Mind That Your Supplies Must Be Kept In A Dry Storage. You should try to always protect your own supply especially since there is no telling if the manufacturers can really keep up with the demand or an expectation of the world now. Make sure that your storage is always kept dry and clean.
  • Use Your Supply Only When Needed. If you have your own supply of N95 masks and N95 respirators, make sure that you only use them when you are really in need.
  • Keep Your Family Informed About The New Things About The Virus.

  • Read The Room, Do Your Share

At the end of the day, it is very important for people to always have the supply that they need for their protection. However, if you are part of the people who want to always protect yourself from the virus, you should also be a part of the people who do their best to protect the world from the virus. You will love what the N95 Masks have to offer. You will certainly have a great experience with it. Make sure that you do your best to have a supply on your own but never forget that the supply should be shared among the population so everyone stays protected with N95 Masks.
