What is the difference between PPE and ventilators?

PPE

PPE stands for Personal Protective Equipment. It has been proven crucial during COVID-19, and it has been recommended by higher healthcare authorities to wear PPE during COVID-19 to curb the spread of this lethal virus. Healthcare workers like doctors and nurses wear Personal Protective Equipment every day to treat patients who have been infected by contagious diseases.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) has been designed to keep an individual safe from contagious viruses and infectious diseases. There are different types of crucial Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) that physicians, nurses, doctors, and other healthcare professionals use to keep each other safe. Such Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) includes N95 respirators, surgical masks, gowns, gloves, and eye protection.

Since healthcare professionals have to come in contact with the treated patients, they must wear such Personal Protective Equipment to avoid getting infected. COVID-19 can spread in different ways. If an individual inhales harmful airborne particles, they will be infected. COVID-19 can spread through eyes as well. Therefore, it is crucial for healthcare providers to wear eye protection to keep themselves safe from getting infected by COVID-19 while treating a patient.

When it comes to the public, it is not crucial for them to wear gowns or eye protection since they do not get in contact with the infected patients. However, they must wear N95 respirators since harmful airborne particles can be inhaled if an infected individual comes in contact with the wearer. Therefore, N95 respirators are mandatory.

N95 respirator

A respiratory protective device that prevents harmful airborne particles from entering the wearer’s body is called the N95 respirator. These airborne particles consist of aerosols as well which could pose harm to an individual’s health. At the filtration of hazardous aerosols and airborne particles, the N95 respirator is 95 percent efficient in keeping the wearer safe.

Large healthcare departments of the United States have recommended the public to wear surgical masks and N95 respirators. The safest Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is the N95 respirator. The N95 respirator prevents the user from getting infected by harmful diseases like lung disease, heart disease, and cardiovascular disease, etc.

Surgical masks

Surgical masks were designed for doctors, physicians, nurses, and healthcare professionals to carry out medical procedures. Surgical masks are good at keeping an individual safe from contagious diseases and viral infections. The only difference between surgical masks and N95 respirators is that surgical masks are less effective whereas the N95 respirators are more effective.

Gowns

The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) has urged healthcare providers to wear surgical gowns while treating infected COVID-19 patients. Surgical gowns are useful because they protect the exposed parts of an individual’s body. These exposed parts include the arms, uncovered neck, and other parts of the body. After treating the infected patients, healthcare providers can take their surgical gowns off. Surgical gowns are recommended for people and healthcare providers who have to come in contact with the infected patients in a confined area.

Gloves

Gloves are crucial Personal Protective Equipment that keeps the hands of the healthcare providers safe while treating patients who have been infected by COVID-19. There are other uses of gloves as well. People use gloves while cleaning their houses because of the dust and dirt they encounter. Some people also use gloves while cleaning dishes.

Eye protection

They are disposable face shields that adequately protect the eyes of a healthcare provider. COVID-19 can spread through uncovered eyes as well. If harmful airborne particles fall on the eyes of an individual, the person would be infected by COVID-19. Since healthcare professionals come in contact with infected patients, they must wear eye protection.

Ventilators

The higher government of the United States is working on ventilators for healthcare facilities across the U.S. Ventilators are machines that help an individual to breathe whose life is in danger. Hospitals require loads of ventilators because countless patients could not survive the fatality of the virus because of less number of ventilations. The majority of these people are elders who could not combat the pandemic because of a feeble immune system.

A ventilator includes a monitor, valves, and air or oxygen supplies. A monitor tracks the oxygen level, heartbeat, and other parameters of the patient. Tubes are inserted into a patient’s nose or mouth to help them in breathing; this is because one of the symptoms of COVID-19 is that the virus makes it hard for the carrier to breathe. Since it is hard for elders to withstand the magnitude of the virus, they are shifted to ventilators.

A ventilator is a breathing machine, and it makes it easy for elderly people to breathe. Therefore, this is what makes the ventilators so useful and indispensable. Valves regulate the amount of oxygen that is going to and from the patient. The ventilators work by gently pushing air into the patient’s airways or lungs that makes it easy for the patient to breathe.

Conclusion

PPE and ventilators have become crucial for healthcare providers and healthcare facilities around the world because of COVID-19. PPE includes N95 respirators, surgical masks, gowns, gloves, and eye protection, etc. Healthcare providers use crucial PPE to treat patients who have been infected by this lethal disease. A ventilator is a breathing machine. Elders are the ones who use ventilators the majority of the time.
