Several health experts confirmed that how tightly a mask fits around your face plays a crucial role in the prevention of COVID-19 and other infectious diseases. Of course, face masks provide a certain level of protection from the spread of COVID-19. However, you need to note that how your mask fits is more important than the material used to make it as the fitness level determines the effectiveness of the filtration and comfort of the mask. Though the material used is also a critical factor in the overall prevention of the virus, but the fit makes it more efficient.
The size of particles of the novel coronavirus is measured at 0.12 microns. This means the virus is too tiny enough to penetrate any leaking area of the mask. That’s why health experts doubt the protective ability of face masks that have loose ends.
Besides, in the words of Keane Veran, co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Mask Manufacturer OURA, “The virus does not move around alone and does not move around naked in the air. It moves in droplets and aerosols. These virus-containing aerosols range from 0.3 to 3 micron in size. Therefore, the effectiveness of any mask should be gauged with this size in mind, not the size of the actual virus.”
In another study, it was unveiled that leakage around the edges of a mask would reduce the already incomplete protection provided by this facial covering by half or more.
Sara L. Zimmer, PhD, an Associate Professor of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Minnesota Medical School, when he was discussing the fitness issue with Healthline, said: “If you can get the mask to fit right, it’s more important than what it is made out of.”
Now, a significant fact that is less known about how much a mask fits the face of the wearer is that “masks are not one size fits all.”
First, masks are made in different sizes. There are X5, S, M, L, and XL. The size of the face of the wearer determines the size of the mask needed. Consequently, wearers need a face-fit sized mask to get a proper facial covering. Human beings are made with different shape of the face. However, note that there are also child-sized masks for children. Child-sized masks are made in multiple size options for different ages.
Kids Face Mask measurements go like this:
For ages 4-12 - 5″x 7″
For ages 2-4 - 4″x 6″
If your child has a broader face, you may need to go for a mask with longer elastic. Meanwhile, health professionals recommend that children under the age of 2 years should not wear cloth face coverings.
“If most air is bypassing the filter, your face mask is not functioning. The essence of a mask is to prevent virus travelling through the air. Also, a condensed weave mask is good, but if there are too many layers, the air may go to the path of least resistance, which are the edges of the mask.
Masks tremendously help prevent uninfected people from contracting COVID-19 and help prevent the infected from spreading the virus to others.
Face masks should not be worn by anybody who has breathing issues, is unconscious, or incapacitated, it will incur on them further harm.
