Will there be a masks mandate after the vaccine has been distributed?

The N95 masks are scarce but will there be a need for masks after the vaccine is distributed? Is a question that we all ponder about.

The N95 masks are scarce but will there be a need for masks after the vaccine is distributed? It is a question that we all ponder about.

After a year of fighting with the deadly coronavirus, the good news is that the vaccine to eradicate the virus has been invented. Even since there was spread of the deadly disease COVID-19 due to the coronavirus, a vaccine needed to be invented with immediate effect to kill the virus and set us free from the clutches of the deadly virus. To stay protected from the virus, it was essential that we used sanitizers, masks and stayed indoors as much as possible. However, we all desperately prayed that a vaccine is invented, and it saves us from the clutches of the deadly coronavirus. Doctors and research scientists from all parts of the world started their work to develop a vaccine that could save all from the deadly virus. It was expected that once the vaccine is developed, the need for masks and sanitizers will go, and the phase to socialize would come again. WHO is seeing the grave cases and death toll approved that once the vaccine is invented, there will be no requirements for approvals so that the process of vaccine’s distribution speeds up. Governments from different countries have even promised free vaccines for their residents. Thus all seemed to be a dream come true. There is a glitch in the dream, and even after the vaccine is distributed, the masks will continue to be a part of our daily lives.

Therefore, the experts have claimed that the masks will continue to be a necessity even after distributing vaccines. The reason for this is as follows:

  1. Masks slow the spread of the virus- masks help slow the spread of the virus; thus, when the vaccine is distributed during the phase, the masks should be worn, or else there will be chaos and more spread of disease. It is known that the virus is spread through respiratory droplets containing viral particles. People who have an infection can spread the droplets when they sneeze, cough, or talk. A mask prevents the infected person from spreading the disease. Also, the person who is not infected can protect themself by using the mask and not inhaling the infected air. Thus if the masks are not worn, people will contract the virus, and the chances of people getting contaminated with the virus will increase. Even the newly elected US President Joe Biden has urged the public to wear masks during the first 100 days.
  2.  The vaccine is highly effective but not 100%- nothing is indeed 100% effective, and this vaccine is no exception. Thus the most important reason to wear the mask even after distributing the vaccine is this fact. The vaccine is proven to be highly effective at preventing symptomatic infections, but it is not 100%. FDA has granted emergency authorization for the use of vaccines. In the trials, it was observed that the Pfizer vaccine is 95%, and the Moderna vaccine is 94% effective in eradicating the disease; thus nothing is 100% full proof. Also, it is not known how effective the vaccine is at preventing infections that don’t present any symptoms. The vaccine also is ineffective in stopping the transmission of the virus between two people. Therefore it could be that even with the vaccine, there is a chance that you could develop the infection without any symptoms and spread it to others if you are not wearing the mask. The vaccine will protect you from getting ill from the virus, and you may not need any treatment, but it is possible that your immunity is strong, and you show no symptoms, but the other person contracts the virus from you and gets ill.
  3. Masks are essential before mass vaccination- the potential risk of spreading the virus before getting infected from the virus will be high. The vaccine is still in its initial levels, and it will take a while before it is made available to the general public. Till the mass vaccine session is not complete, the need to wear the masks will continue. The vaccine will affect stopping the spread of the disease, but it's a long term process and will take a few months before the virus is eradicated. the vaccine will be given in the course of different doses. It was observed that after the first dose, the vaccine gave only 50% of protection and it was after the second dose that the protection levels reached above 90%. The dose is placed over a period of three to four weeks. Therefore until the majority of masses is vaccinated with the second dose, people need to wear the mask, wash hands regularly, use sanitizers to stay protected from the deadly virus.

It has been estimated that 70% of the population will take months to gain their immunity either from the vaccine or the coronavirus infection. The government has announced that not all will get vaccinated, nor will all get vaccinated. Thus, using masks becomes mandatory for protecting ourselves. The masks effectively stop the coronavirus, but it is also effective in staying away from breathing the polluted air, or dust or germs. Thus wear the mask and stay protected not only from coronavirus and all other sorts of viruses, bacteria, and airborne diseases.
