Medical masks are designed to protect the wearer from inhaling or ingesting infectious materials. They provide suitable protection from many airborne viruses and pathogens. While no face covering is hundred per cent effective, a medical mask can help you block many particles - especially those that are on your hands - from entering your airways and causing infection.
All medical masks work in a similar way and are often made of three to four layers. The internal layer, usually white, is made of a soft absorbent material which helps to capture and contain liquid as it leaves your mouth. The outer layer, usually blue (or green, but can be any colour), is made of a water-resistant material, it is designed to repel any water droplets that hit the mask. So, if someone sneezes in your vicinity, it helps drain potentially infectious droplets away from your nose and mouth. The inner layer (or layers), is usually a filter made of a tightly woven fabric or carbon which helps trap any chemicals or dust particles from the air.
The main purpose of all face masks is to stop the wearer from spreading any viruses they are infected with and to stop the wearer from being infected by other people. However, masks do work best when both people (and anyone in the vicinity) are wearing the masks or any other form of face shields.
Face masks provide an inexpensive solution for the protection of the user as they are cheap and offer good value for what they can achieve. Although there are better options (mainly the N95 mask), for most people, standard medical masks or surgical masks are more than suitable for everyday use.
Medical masks have two distinct sides. The outside of the mask is usually colored (mostly in blue and green) and the soft white side needs to go over your mouth and nose. All masks will have some way of securing it tightly to your face. Commonly they will attach via ear loops, although some will have strings that need to be tied behind your head. If you have a choice, pick the one that you feel most comfortable with.
To put the medical mask on, locate the metal strip in the mask, this part goes over the bridge of your nose. Hold the mask by the ear loops or straps, and place it over your nose and secure the mask to your head. Bend the metal strip over your nose so it firmly covers your face and then pull the mask down so it covers your chin.
A properly fitted mask should comfortably cover your nose and mouth. Once you put on the mask, try not to touch it with your hands. If you find the mask has gaps at the side, you can twist the ear loops and it will close this gap and make it fit to your face better.
You should always wash your hands with soap and water or use a good quality hand sanitizer before wearing or removing a medical mask. This will protect your mask from any contamination caused by a virus on your hands.
When deciding how many masks you will need, consider the activity levels of yourself and your family. A regular person will use approximately 2-3 masks a day (depending on the time they spend outdoors or in an industrial or medical setup), so, for a month's supply you’ll need a minimum of 60 masks. It’s best to order the medical masks in bulk and we can ship them directly to your door.
Most medical and surgical masks are designed to be used once. Ideally, they should be replaced every four to six hours as wearing them beyond this time will reduce the effectiveness of the mask.
If you’re wearing a mask to a workplace, you should carry a few along with you. During high periods of activity where you’ll be breathing in and out more often, the masks will not last as long. When you’re at work, changing a mask during your lunch break is a good way to make sure you’re getting the best amount of protection from the mask.
When a mask is past its usability, you should remove it from your face and snap the ear bands. This will make sure no one else uses the mask and possibly get infected from anything that has been breathed into it. The mask should be carefully disposed as the materials in the mask are non-recyclable.
