What is N95 respirator?
The N95 face mask is a full face disposable mask designed to filter out unwanted particulate materials. It is manufactured in a very specific way known as melt blowing which forms a protective filtration layer within the mask’s interior. The N95 Respirator is made from densely woven synthetic polymer materials and the manufacturer must meet the US standards of safety for the face shield to be sold as an N95 rated mask.
Regular 3 ply surgical masks provide minimal protection for the wearer against the chance of contracting anything airborne including influenza and other respiratory illnesses. A surgical mask (i.e. the ASTM Level 3 Mask) is generally worn to prevent spreading germs of illness to other people rather than protecting the wearer from germs they may inhale while in public spaces or in close quarters with people carrying germs and illness symptoms. It also does not provide any filtration of the air a person breathes through the mask, lacking the filtering layer that the N95 Respirator possesses.
While you are wearing your N95 Respirator, it is important that the mask fits tightly over your face and completely covers your nose and mouth. It should sit snugly against the flesh of your facing, forming a seal around the edge of the mask. In order for the respirator to remain effective, all air that you breathe in must be breathed through the filtration layer. This is the layer that will trap unwanted pathogens and materials from entering your airway. Once the seal around the mask is broken, you can no longer rely on its ability to provide you with safe air.
If you have facial hair, then the N95 Respirator may not offer you protection while you’re wearing it. Similarly, small children may not be able to keep the mask effectively in place while wearing it. For kids, see kids' masks.
It is not a reusable mask and must be discarded safely after use. Generally, the mask is safe to wear for up to 8 hours but ensure you read the manufacturer’s instructions thoroughly for the best time limits on its effectiveness. You cannot wash and reuse your N95 Respirator. Once the interior layer – the layer responsible for offering you filtration of air particles – has become moist, it is time to discard your mask and place a new one on.
Initially, you may experience slightly laboured breathing while you are wearing your N95 Respirator. This is completely normal. Usually when we breathe, we are not breathing through a thickly layered filter, so the energy required for inhalation is minimal. Once you are wearing anything over your nose and mouth, you will require more energy for a normal breath. Try a fit test first and wear your mask around your home for a few minutes at a time to become used to how it feels on your face and how you adjust to breathing while wearing it. If you experience trouble breathing, remove your mask immediately and refrain for strenuous activity until your regular breathing rhythm returns. If you are experiencing severe respiratory distress, consult a medical professional immediately.
How effective are the N95 Respirators?
The N95 Respirator is designed to filter up to 95% of airborne particles while worn correctly. It protects the wearing from inhaling dangerous air pollutants, but it should be used in conjunction with a strict personal hygiene practice which involves regularly washing your hands for at least 30 seconds with soap and water. The use of soap and water removes the germ-carrying natural oils on our hands and remains the best way to ensure against infection.
If you do not have access to soap and water, then ensure you have a hand sanitizer with you which you can use to quickly sanitize your hands as well as other surfaces you need to be in contact with. A sanitizer should contain at least 70% alcohol to be an effective germ killer.
When you remove your N95 Respirator, carefully dispose of it in your trash, taking care to wash or sanitize your hands after you have discarded the mask. The protective layer of the N95 Respirator is only on the inside of the mask and dangerous germs may settle on the outside of the material.
